Vulcanized Fiber Tube

Vulcanized fiber tube for fuse and electrical insulation components
Vulcanized fiber tube

Vulcanized fiber tube is a dense cellulose-based electrical insulation tube produced from treated paper plies wound on a mandrel, then dried and finished to the required dimensions. It combines electrical insulation, machinability and arc-related performance for fuse components, bushings, insulators and other custom parts.

How vulcanized fibre tubing is made

The existing manufacturing description uses zinc-chloride-treated paper wound to a predetermined wall thickness. The tube then passes through washing or conditioning, drying, rolling and dimensional finishing. Inside and outside diameters can be ground or sanded to the approved drawing. The outside surface may also be knurled or skived when the tube will be combined with a fiberglass overwrap.

Available sizes and customization

ItemCurrent product data / options
MaterialVulcanized cellulose fiber
Inside diameter5 mm to 65 mm listed; confirm tolerance and measuring method
Length8 mm to 1000 mm listed
ColorsGray, black and red listed; confirm color requirement before sampling
Surface optionsSmooth, knurled or rolled thread, subject to drawing review
MachiningCutting, drilling, inside/outside threading, turning, polishing and other features can be reviewed
Legacy density referenceApproximately 1.40 g/cm³ is stated in the existing product data; confirm the applicable grade and test method

Final dimensions and performance should be agreed from a controlled drawing or specification. For electrical protection designs, state the required dielectric test, arc exposure, moisture condition, operating temperature and mechanical load. Do not select a grade from density or color alone.

Typical electrical applications

Common applications include fuse cartridges, fuse links, high-voltage cutout fuse liners, lightning arrester components, grommets, bushings, coil forms, motor insulation, switch insulation, terminal strips and transformer insulation. The material can be sanded, knurled, spiral-cut, threaded and turned, which helps when the component needs a finished bore, shoulder or external surface.

What engineers should confirm before ordering

  • Inside diameter, outside diameter, wall thickness, length and tolerances
  • Fuse or equipment application, voltage class and operating environment
  • Required electrical, arc, mechanical and moisture-conditioning tests
  • Surface treatment, machining features and inspection method
  • Sample quantity, production quantity, packaging and traceability documents

Frequently asked questions

What is a vulcanized fiber tube used for in fuse design?
A vulcanized fiber tube works as the insulating and arc-handling sleeve inside fuse cartridges, fuse links, high-voltage cutout liners and lightning arrester parts. It delivers electrical insulation while staying machinable for finished bores, shoulders and threads.

Can you supply a custom inside diameter and length?
Yes. Inside diameters from 5 mm to 65 mm and lengths from 8 mm to 1000 mm are listed, and custom wall thickness, tolerances and surface finish are reviewed against your drawing.

Do you provide samples and a material data sheet?
Yes. The product brochure carries the existing reference data and sample units are available; confirm any safety-critical value with the engineering team before ordering.
